I haven't heard of anyone dying and not returning. Not yet. All of the people who disappear get up and go into the forest. They don't come back.

Weirder still: some people go into the forest, go home, and come back again.

Not that I'm aware. I think it's sentient. It grows and changes as it pleases, duping everyone. People have gone in to look for supplies, food, explore. The forest changes each time. It shows people what it wants, hides what it doesn't.
When you try to get cocky, it sends monsters.
If everything is based around fairy tales like the ones in the library, then crossing through the forest would perhaps get us back home--or at least get us to understanding this place.
