test drive meme 1.

Her Pa committed suicide
By biting off his head.
Her mother saw her uncle's ghost
And died of fright, she said.
So her unpleasant habits
Seem most curious to me,
Because she seems to come from such
A happy family.

Prompt 1:

he forest looms as ever, colorless but not at all dead. The leaves are full, fluttering in the silence, but there's no scent to them, no color. The effect is eerily hard to navigate, almost like an optical illusion, leaves, branches and trunk blending together with the small path -- which already disappears and reappears at a whim.

But even so...

If you brave the path, it seems as though there is something leading you onwards. A trail of... something, crumbs, maybe, the same shade of colorless as everything else, almost impossible to see. Following those might be a bad idea -- your chances of getting lost, tangled in random underbrush, or wandering aimlessly for hours are pretty high... to say nothing of what you might encounter if you stray too far (hint: even the small, fuzzy things have nasty bites).

Still, it's there, and if you follow them... eventually you will come to a small house. It's decrepit, falling apart and in shambles... do you really want to go inside? Perhaps armed with one of the many convenient tree branches that have probably smacked you thus far?

Prompt 2:

hould you enter the house, you'll be greeted with a creepy, creepy doorman. Aw, how cute! And in that doll's hand, there's...a message.

On a slip of paper, it reads, simply and plainly:

The more you take, the more you leave behind.

Curious! (And yeah, you can destroy the doll. It's just a normal doll. You may even come across said doll already crushed by an intrepid explorer.)

Of course, it's a riddle, and the answer's a warning -- the longer you walk around and about the house, the less you'll remember about yourself, until you forget why you were there and why you should leave, and who you are at all, doomed to wander forever.

Or someone saves you, that's fine too.

Prompt 3:

roblem: There are no fresh eggs in the Town.

Solution: Catch a feral chicken, and keep it for eggs. That seems simple enough, right? You're totally up for the task... right?

But why do all of the animals look so strange in the forest? Mutated, with teeth, or wings that don't belong, or claws. That's... a chicken, right?

Catching it will allow you to get some eggs, but that beak looks pretty nasty -- it might be harder than it looks. But you're intrepid and clever, right? Why not demonstrate your Chicken Wrangling Skills that won you the championship so many years ago? Or try to serenade the savage beast? Or wuss out and form a coalition with which you draw lots to see who has to do battle with the chicken? There's safety in numbers! But the prize will surely be worth a bit of blood loss and fowl-related trauma.

Do it for the eggs.

Prompt 4:

here's a new quest on the forum today, and it looks awfully easy! It's listed simply as:

Quest XXII.
Talk to someone you've never met about their childhood.
Quest will be completed when you have reached an acceptable level of knowledge.

On the other hand, that's a little vague, isn't it... ? How will you even know when you've completed a quest like that?

Still, it looks easy! Maybe go give it a try. You could respond to the forum post to try to find people, or just go on outside, go harass someone about their past. If you're lucky, you'll drag it out of them with very little hassle and it won't take you a good chunk of the day. If you're unlucky, that's what highly persistent stalking is for! But don't forget, you'll likely have to return the favor.

And your new friend might not be the only one listening.

[ Ah, that's definitely struck a nerve. Ignis might not let on -- he rarely ever does; the man has iron control over his emotions and moods, and Noctis can almost swear that he's never seen him lose his temper. Well, there was that one time, long ago, when Noctis had taken crayons and defaced a priceless portrait, and the look of horror on Ignis' face had been so profoundly, intensely genuine that Noctis had never tried it again.

He remembers. He remembers when he'd first met Ignis, clasped his hand with both of his. He remembers the first taste of that fluffy pastry, and all the others that came after -- ones that didn't quite taste right but Noctis didn't mind tasting one after another, offering honest feedback, enjoying the pastries all the same; after all, Ignis was the one who made them, and they were delicious.

He frowns. Someone said that before. Someone he shared one of Ignis' tarts with, at school. Someone he remembers in flashes, and frowns. Then Ignis mentions tattoos. Tattoos. He remembers tattoos, as well -- a glimpse of dark hair and tawny eyes, the smell of sand and canvas, the sizzling of meat on a grill. Noctis tries to remember, grasping at straws, but the details are fuzzy, and Noctis is looking at down at the neat words, small and definitely readable.

Trust Ignis to have thought of this, too, and he nods like the addendum is the most natural thing in the world; it is, if you ask Noctis. He trusts him with his life, and as his oldest, closest companion, he more than has the right to make that assertion. Ignis has earned it, over and over again -- his devotion and loyalty second to none, a harbor in stormy seas. ]

No, it sounds good. [ Noctis can't help a flutter of apprehension: maybe it only sounds good because he's forgotten what to add. ] And if you forget anything, I'll just remind you, okay? C'mon, let's go.

... right, the next one! With only one task provided, it's not like we can reasonably predict the next one. [Unless they all have to deal with honesty in which case he may find his color options dreadfully limited. Still, a bird could dream.]

That said, it's such a good opportunity to gather information about how this place works... Say, my fine, bipedal friend, you seem like a good listener. I might have a fishing net. Not that I've ever used it, but.

[ There are probably plenty of reasons why using fishing nets to catch birds aren't ideal, especially ones that look like they'd have no compunctions about feasting on your guts when you sleep, or something. Much less accidentally suffocating it. Or the very real danger of getting near those dangerous beaks when you're trying to cut them free.

Noctis glances over at him, could almost have sworn he'd seem a flash of metal. Then again, it's pretty rude to stare, and they do have a chicken problem they need to solve. ]

I don't know either. It's why I had to come back. I think this house is especially dangerous if you're alone.

[ Because then there's nothing to tether you. Her own curiosity could have been her undoing, because even though it wasn't a limitless house, she couldn't remember going through rooms multiple times. She was just searching, always hoping that in the next room she might find the person that owned this house. She hoped maybe they could explain this colorless world.

When he says he'll try, she looks at him again, but this time with an encouraging smile. ]

But if you need something to try and remember, just focus on my name. That might be easier.

[ Far easier than trying to pull something out of your past when this house makes your thoughts foggy. She's not even sure if trying to remember something even helps, but she feels like it helps keep her own mind sharper against the influence of whatever is doing this. She's of course focusing on the way out, having memorized it with a mnemonic to keep it as clear as possible. As they come to a door, she murmurs something under her breath that sounds like a rhyme, but nods and heads through the door. ]

[ She says while simultaneously knocking on the door. It's polite at first, but then realizing that this is a big house, she clenches her hand into a tighter fist to bang louder against the door. Then, she waits.

And waits.

And after waiting some more, she huffs lightly, then reaches out to grab the door's handle and push. It's not really surprising that it's unlocked, considering the state of the house, but she still breathes out a soft "oh" before opening the door and stepping inside. She looks around the entryway (not noticing the doll just yet), but then turns towards the window that Okuyasu was planning to crawl through. ]

If there's one thing Bucky can perhaps appreciate about Damian, it'll be the persistence in which he doesn't give up trying to catch this chicken.

Once he gets his bearings, he pins the rope under his stomach, and his crawl gets more focused and speedier. When he's close enough, he rises up, letting a knee take the place of his stomach to hold the rope so the chicken doesn't bolt if it forgets Bucky in favor of him.

Like a cat, calibrating, he pauses for several seconds, then he leaps forward and grabs the chicken at the thighs and hocks. He goes from pouncing, to standing, to shifting the chicken as fast as possible, making it easier on the two of them.

And even being so young, he apparently knows to thread his fingers over the shanks to keep the legs from kicking, knows to turn the chicken half on its side when it's pressed against him, knows to keep a hand on the wing. Naturally, the chicken is angry at first, but then it only realizes it can't flap much less escape.
