test drive meme 1.

Her Pa committed suicide
By biting off his head.
Her mother saw her uncle's ghost
And died of fright, she said.
So her unpleasant habits
Seem most curious to me,
Because she seems to come from such
A happy family.

Prompt 1:

he forest looms as ever, colorless but not at all dead. The leaves are full, fluttering in the silence, but there's no scent to them, no color. The effect is eerily hard to navigate, almost like an optical illusion, leaves, branches and trunk blending together with the small path -- which already disappears and reappears at a whim.

But even so...

If you brave the path, it seems as though there is something leading you onwards. A trail of... something, crumbs, maybe, the same shade of colorless as everything else, almost impossible to see. Following those might be a bad idea -- your chances of getting lost, tangled in random underbrush, or wandering aimlessly for hours are pretty high... to say nothing of what you might encounter if you stray too far (hint: even the small, fuzzy things have nasty bites).

Still, it's there, and if you follow them... eventually you will come to a small house. It's decrepit, falling apart and in shambles... do you really want to go inside? Perhaps armed with one of the many convenient tree branches that have probably smacked you thus far?

Prompt 2:

hould you enter the house, you'll be greeted with a creepy, creepy doorman. Aw, how cute! And in that doll's hand, there's...a message.

On a slip of paper, it reads, simply and plainly:

The more you take, the more you leave behind.

Curious! (And yeah, you can destroy the doll. It's just a normal doll. You may even come across said doll already crushed by an intrepid explorer.)

Of course, it's a riddle, and the answer's a warning -- the longer you walk around and about the house, the less you'll remember about yourself, until you forget why you were there and why you should leave, and who you are at all, doomed to wander forever.

Or someone saves you, that's fine too.

Prompt 3:

roblem: There are no fresh eggs in the Town.

Solution: Catch a feral chicken, and keep it for eggs. That seems simple enough, right? You're totally up for the task... right?

But why do all of the animals look so strange in the forest? Mutated, with teeth, or wings that don't belong, or claws. That's... a chicken, right?

Catching it will allow you to get some eggs, but that beak looks pretty nasty -- it might be harder than it looks. But you're intrepid and clever, right? Why not demonstrate your Chicken Wrangling Skills that won you the championship so many years ago? Or try to serenade the savage beast? Or wuss out and form a coalition with which you draw lots to see who has to do battle with the chicken? There's safety in numbers! But the prize will surely be worth a bit of blood loss and fowl-related trauma.

Do it for the eggs.

Prompt 4:

here's a new quest on the forum today, and it looks awfully easy! It's listed simply as:

Quest XXII.
Talk to someone you've never met about their childhood.
Quest will be completed when you have reached an acceptable level of knowledge.

On the other hand, that's a little vague, isn't it... ? How will you even know when you've completed a quest like that?

Still, it looks easy! Maybe go give it a try. You could respond to the forum post to try to find people, or just go on outside, go harass someone about their past. If you're lucky, you'll drag it out of them with very little hassle and it won't take you a good chunk of the day. If you're unlucky, that's what highly persistent stalking is for! But don't forget, you'll likely have to return the favor.

And your new friend might not be the only one listening.

It's making you forget. Maybe everything.

[ At least she doesn't beat around the bush, though that might also be a hyperbole. She had hardly forgotten everything, but it had unnerved her enough that she worries that it could.

As they take a few steps, she lets go of his hand, since it seems like he doesn't need her pulling him along. Some people might, which is why she's so insistent that she'll grab their hand, but he seems to believe her. It's a nice change, considering her earlier "rescues." ]

I think that's what the riddle meant. You leave behind your memories by being here.
hydrokinetics: (That most folks wont yeah)

[She's in luck, he's definitely used to being bossed around by girls so he doesn't even seem to bother fighting her. When she lets go of his hand his hands slip into the pockets of his jeans and he continues following after her, but the expression on his face quickly slips from dazed to annoyed.]

This again? ["Again", Percy?] You'd think they would learn to leave people's memories--especially my memories--alone. How did you figure out that's what's happening?

Again? [ She looks at him curiously, since this doesn't exactly seem normal to her. But tbh just give it time Elizabeth, you're about to get there in canon ] Is this... something that happens to you frequently?

[ Though at his question, her expression gets a little more conflicted, and she reaches up to place her fingers on the brooch on her necklace. ]

I realized I had forgotten someone I know. I couldn't remember how to leave, but I knew I needed to. I was lucky that someone that had just arrived was able to lead me back to the entrance.

Waking up in weird locations with no memory of how I got there and getting in situations where I'm losing memories? More than you'd think. [Even with how he says it he sounds mostly calm about it even if there's still an underlying tone of frustration.

Fuck Hera, basically.

Still, green eyes track her movements and he notices the brooch.]

And now you're back trying to help the rest of us. That's pretty cool of you. Did you remember everything as soon as you left? [...now that he thinks about it, it should have been obvious once he found himself wandering. Usually he has an idea of what's happening but aimless wandering has never suited him very well. Exploring, sure, but not this.]

[ It's surprising, naturally, so she gives him a look of sympathy, since she's not sure how else to take that information. He doesn't seem too bothered by it, so maybe she shouldn't be? ]

I wouldn't think it would happen at all, so definitely more than I'd think. [ But there's something there that's a bit of a relief, so she wants to clarify: ] So you don't remember how you got here either? This whole colorless place, that is.

[ Since, yeah, he definitely doesn't remember the house, she assumes. It's best to clarify. ]

Yes. Or... [ She smiles, just a little wry ] I hope so. I guess if I didn't, I wouldn't really know.

[ Though considering a lot of her memories, she wouldn't exactly mind forgetting most of them at this point. Just leave her with her memories of her books, her painting, and Paris, and she would be happy with that. Good riddance to everything else, maybe even including Mr. Dewitt. ]

If it helps, I wasn't the only one. But that's what happens when you switch people around. [But enough about that. He shakes his head, more than willing to cooperate as he gestures somewhere "that way" to indicate it's out of the house.] I remember being at home and then I woke up in a well. Not the weirdest place to wake up, but if other people started there, too, that's a problem.

[There's an equally sympathetic smile.] You said it was a person, right? What you forgot. [There's a glance to the ceiling and while it may look like a careless gesture he's also eyeing the area to make sure nothing drops down to surprise them.] Even if you lost memories of them there's always at least one thing you remember even if it doesn't make a lot of sense at the time.

[It's how it worked for Annabeth, maybe. Annabeth, whom he hasn't seen since he showed up and while he's concerned he's used to being separated from her by now. It just means she'll berate him for getting mixed up in other people's agendas then but that's just kind of how everything goes. Maybe this is Apollo's fault. Maybe it's something totally unrelated. It's hard to say and he can't think too much on it.]

...but thanks, by the way. For the wake-up call.

[ She nods as her hand falls away from the brooch. With her hand removed from it and how she draws attention to it, if Percy looks, he'll notice the design is of a golden cage. ]

Luckily, you're right. I could remember that he helped me pick this brooch over another, but I couldn't remember who it was. That helped that riddle click into place. Otherwise I don't know how long I might have been looking around this house...

[ Probably forever, though she's definitely still just exaggerating that in her own mind. She also happens to be right? Thanks, colorless world. ]

You're welcome. It's a terribly subtle trick, so I couldn't just leave if other people were here too. [ She looks back to Percy with a smile ] And I'm Elizabeth, by the way.

[It's pretty. It's an idle thought, but it's pretty and he thinks it suits her before his thoughts move on to something else.] Maybe that's what happened to everybody who came here before us. They wandered forever and they got lost without finding their way out.

[The Lotus was like that. A place where literal years could pass by and you wouldn't even notice or remember the passage of time. He frowns a little but he lifts a hand to touch the wall of the house to check how sturdy it is.] Not everybody would come back if something like losing memories freaked them out. As long as everybody's with at least one other person though it might not be so bad. [There's a returned, grateful smile then.] Percy. Nice to meet you.
