test drive meme 1.

Her Pa committed suicide
By biting off his head.
Her mother saw her uncle's ghost
And died of fright, she said.
So her unpleasant habits
Seem most curious to me,
Because she seems to come from such
A happy family.

Prompt 1:

he forest looms as ever, colorless but not at all dead. The leaves are full, fluttering in the silence, but there's no scent to them, no color. The effect is eerily hard to navigate, almost like an optical illusion, leaves, branches and trunk blending together with the small path -- which already disappears and reappears at a whim.

But even so...

If you brave the path, it seems as though there is something leading you onwards. A trail of... something, crumbs, maybe, the same shade of colorless as everything else, almost impossible to see. Following those might be a bad idea -- your chances of getting lost, tangled in random underbrush, or wandering aimlessly for hours are pretty high... to say nothing of what you might encounter if you stray too far (hint: even the small, fuzzy things have nasty bites).

Still, it's there, and if you follow them... eventually you will come to a small house. It's decrepit, falling apart and in shambles... do you really want to go inside? Perhaps armed with one of the many convenient tree branches that have probably smacked you thus far?

Prompt 2:

hould you enter the house, you'll be greeted with a creepy, creepy doorman. Aw, how cute! And in that doll's hand, there's...a message.

On a slip of paper, it reads, simply and plainly:

The more you take, the more you leave behind.

Curious! (And yeah, you can destroy the doll. It's just a normal doll. You may even come across said doll already crushed by an intrepid explorer.)

Of course, it's a riddle, and the answer's a warning -- the longer you walk around and about the house, the less you'll remember about yourself, until you forget why you were there and why you should leave, and who you are at all, doomed to wander forever.

Or someone saves you, that's fine too.

Prompt 3:

roblem: There are no fresh eggs in the Town.

Solution: Catch a feral chicken, and keep it for eggs. That seems simple enough, right? You're totally up for the task... right?

But why do all of the animals look so strange in the forest? Mutated, with teeth, or wings that don't belong, or claws. That's... a chicken, right?

Catching it will allow you to get some eggs, but that beak looks pretty nasty -- it might be harder than it looks. But you're intrepid and clever, right? Why not demonstrate your Chicken Wrangling Skills that won you the championship so many years ago? Or try to serenade the savage beast? Or wuss out and form a coalition with which you draw lots to see who has to do battle with the chicken? There's safety in numbers! But the prize will surely be worth a bit of blood loss and fowl-related trauma.

Do it for the eggs.

Prompt 4:

here's a new quest on the forum today, and it looks awfully easy! It's listed simply as:

Quest XXII.
Talk to someone you've never met about their childhood.
Quest will be completed when you have reached an acceptable level of knowledge.

On the other hand, that's a little vague, isn't it... ? How will you even know when you've completed a quest like that?

Still, it looks easy! Maybe go give it a try. You could respond to the forum post to try to find people, or just go on outside, go harass someone about their past. If you're lucky, you'll drag it out of them with very little hassle and it won't take you a good chunk of the day. If you're unlucky, that's what highly persistent stalking is for! But don't forget, you'll likely have to return the favor.

And your new friend might not be the only one listening.

[ oh... ]

That might have been my thought originally, but...

[ he realized he probably wouldn't know what to do after he caught it before that could happen. ]

A small box would be cruel, but this town seems large. There must be some sort of container for it until we find a more suitable one. Perhaps we could set a trap for it?
good_ideas: (geez || just this once okay)

[She'll never admit how glad she is that he's no longer going to charge a chicken.]

...that was what I was thinking. It's too unpredictable for us to chase, right? [They didn't know what kind of stamina this chicken had and Shiho disliked working hard when a more efficient solution was available.]

We could even use this.

[Shiho taps the barrel she's sitting on with one finger. It's big enough, looks sturdy enough. All they had to do was maneuver it into a good position. Or rig up a complicated series of pulleys and ropes. (or find a telekinetic)]

[ (is she telekenetic??) iida looks from her to the barrel to the chicken to the barrel and back to her, brows raised. ]

Ah, of course! [ he keeps his voice down, but he's enthusiastic about the idea! she gets a big smile as he brings up a finger. ] We could lure it into one place with some sort of bait and then drop the barrel over it. It seems sturdy enough that it won't break, even if it runs into it.

[ not that he really knows that!! but it's a chicken-thing! how much harm could it do? ]
good_ideas: (geez || i'll find you eventually)

[(Unfortunately she's just a boring old psychometer...) Her expression does soften somewhat when he smiles though because while she's sharp-tongued and rude and sarcastic and treats everyone as if they were little babies, she's a softie at heart and has a weakness for honest, kind people.]

Let's use this, then. [Shiho doesn't really want any eggs, but maybe they could be sold for a good price. Eggs were scarce here, after all. Supply and demand, right?

She hops off the barrel, waving her hand at it:]

You'll have to carry it, and we need to get bait. [Which is another problem: what does this chicken eat/want? Maybe they could bait it with a chicken plushie, or seeds....or whatever it is that chickens ate. Then again...they could also set this up somewhere they could manipulate the chicken into running straight for it...]

...are there alleys in this town?

[ would a chicken plush lure another chicken... maybe it works on this kind of chicken? if all else fails,,

he steals a glance at the chicken to be sure it isn't scared off when she settles back onto the ground (it isn't) and then looks back to her, blinking. ]

I believe so. [ the town has plenty of buildings. ] You're saying we should lure and trap the chicken there? We would have to be sure to wall off one end of the alleyway if it's not already.
good_ideas: (geez || i'll find you eventually)

[personal profile] good_ideas 2018-02-26 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
[It could be a very lonely chicken? Shiho won't judge the chicken.]

An alley would give it only one direction to run. As long as it can't fly either, it should work. Walls we can build, maybe with some useless furniture or some planks of wood...

[The biggest problem here...]

How do we lure it there in the first place?

[personal profile] reingenium 2018-02-28 05:51 am (UTC)(link)
[ iida won't either... but can she sew a chicken plush? iida can't (and probably shouldn't). ]

Bait would be our best option, correct? [ he looks off towards the ground in thought, adjusting his glasses by their bridge. ] Although we would have to find grain or corn of some kind, if my assumptions about what chickens eat are correct... That, or we would have to force it there.

[ his eyes flicker back to her. yes, he's saying he might chase the chicken. what other options do they have?? ]

good_ideas: (geez || kinda worried. maybe. sorta.)

[personal profile] good_ideas 2018-03-01 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
[She can if she borrows a needle from someone with at least a bit of sewing expertise thanks to her psychometry. Otherwise they'll be baiting this chicken with a plush that could (in the right light, by putting your head in a certain position and squinting for at least 5 minutes) pass as something vaguely bird-like.]

I think grain here is better saved and used for planting, isn't it?

[Shiho is still not sure about chasing the chicken, especially because she worries it may attack. Sure, she could probably incapacitate it if it did attack, but the point here has always been to catch it, not to injure and possibly kill it.]

...Chickens... eat other things though, don't they? Like... worms. [Or maybe she's seen something like that in a drawing before.]
