test drive meme 1.

Her Pa committed suicide
By biting off his head.
Her mother saw her uncle's ghost
And died of fright, she said.
So her unpleasant habits
Seem most curious to me,
Because she seems to come from such
A happy family.

Prompt 1:

he forest looms as ever, colorless but not at all dead. The leaves are full, fluttering in the silence, but there's no scent to them, no color. The effect is eerily hard to navigate, almost like an optical illusion, leaves, branches and trunk blending together with the small path -- which already disappears and reappears at a whim.

But even so...

If you brave the path, it seems as though there is something leading you onwards. A trail of... something, crumbs, maybe, the same shade of colorless as everything else, almost impossible to see. Following those might be a bad idea -- your chances of getting lost, tangled in random underbrush, or wandering aimlessly for hours are pretty high... to say nothing of what you might encounter if you stray too far (hint: even the small, fuzzy things have nasty bites).

Still, it's there, and if you follow them... eventually you will come to a small house. It's decrepit, falling apart and in shambles... do you really want to go inside? Perhaps armed with one of the many convenient tree branches that have probably smacked you thus far?

Prompt 2:

hould you enter the house, you'll be greeted with a creepy, creepy doorman. Aw, how cute! And in that doll's hand, there's...a message.

On a slip of paper, it reads, simply and plainly:

The more you take, the more you leave behind.

Curious! (And yeah, you can destroy the doll. It's just a normal doll. You may even come across said doll already crushed by an intrepid explorer.)

Of course, it's a riddle, and the answer's a warning -- the longer you walk around and about the house, the less you'll remember about yourself, until you forget why you were there and why you should leave, and who you are at all, doomed to wander forever.

Or someone saves you, that's fine too.

Prompt 3:

roblem: There are no fresh eggs in the Town.

Solution: Catch a feral chicken, and keep it for eggs. That seems simple enough, right? You're totally up for the task... right?

But why do all of the animals look so strange in the forest? Mutated, with teeth, or wings that don't belong, or claws. That's... a chicken, right?

Catching it will allow you to get some eggs, but that beak looks pretty nasty -- it might be harder than it looks. But you're intrepid and clever, right? Why not demonstrate your Chicken Wrangling Skills that won you the championship so many years ago? Or try to serenade the savage beast? Or wuss out and form a coalition with which you draw lots to see who has to do battle with the chicken? There's safety in numbers! But the prize will surely be worth a bit of blood loss and fowl-related trauma.

Do it for the eggs.

Prompt 4:

here's a new quest on the forum today, and it looks awfully easy! It's listed simply as:

Quest XXII.
Talk to someone you've never met about their childhood.
Quest will be completed when you have reached an acceptable level of knowledge.

On the other hand, that's a little vague, isn't it... ? How will you even know when you've completed a quest like that?

Still, it looks easy! Maybe go give it a try. You could respond to the forum post to try to find people, or just go on outside, go harass someone about their past. If you're lucky, you'll drag it out of them with very little hassle and it won't take you a good chunk of the day. If you're unlucky, that's what highly persistent stalking is for! But don't forget, you'll likely have to return the favor.

And your new friend might not be the only one listening.

If it's an abandoned house, we probably don't need to worry about fixing it.

[That and he doesn't think the supernatural gets too mad about broken things if they were this fragile anyway. But just his two cents on the topic. That and he hasn't sensed anything hostile in here. Not that he can sense things at all, but he imagines it could be felt by a normal person if that were the case.

Or maybe not.

In any case, Mikiya makes his way to the kitchen. If there's even a remote sign of life, he imagines that should be somewhat used.

He thinks. His mind is starting to feel a little fuzzy.]

Let's try the kitchen first.

[ It's true that there are likely no owners to apologize to, but he still feels the need to apologize to something after he'd gone and destroyed part of the house, unintentional and probably inevitable as it was. He compromises by letting his hand rest on the wall, picking up dust as he runs his hands across the surface, and whispers his sorry to the house itself. ]

The kitchen? [ Why...? Oh, that's right. ] If there's somebody living here, there would be food.

[ If there's a generator out here, there might be a refrigerator too. This is general knowledge, but Ryoji can't seem to piece together what a fridge might look like; he'd never needed one. But there are cupboards lining the walls, so these are what he opens, giving the handles little gentle tugs until the caked dirt gives way and the doors swing open. All empty. ]

Those were my thoughts if we're dealing with beings that need food to live.

[Which implies that even if there's no food or dishes that doesn't mean that no one is living or occupying this house. But he looks into the refrigerator and well, just like the cupboards, it's empty. So at least they're not dealing with living beings. He's not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. Probably more of a bad thing since unless Ryoji can sense spiritual things, they're doomed.

Or it could be nothing at all and it's just a random house out here to scare them. Or attempt to scare them.]

There's nothing in the refrigerator. It doesn't even seem like the kitchen's been used in quite a long time.

[personal profile] appraiser 2018-02-26 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
[ Ryoji drifts from the cupboards to the sink, but no water runs through the pipes either, not even black sludgy mud that at least tells them somebody used to live here. But it's been empty long enough that if there's a well somewhere, it's run dry. ]

Hm~ If there are ghosts of the people who used to live here, what about bedrooms? Even if it's completely empty, things like the color of the paint on the walls can tell us something about the people who used to live here.

[ Rather than fear or wariness, Ryoji just looks sort of excited, like this is all some grand adventure to be had. Whatever spiritual awareness he may or may not have doesn't matter- he's smitten with the idea of there being something supernatural about the house. ]

Those should be upstairs, so let's head up!

[Well, seeing him so excited it's hard for Mikiya not to be pulled along. To him, it just feels like another job which may not exactly be a bad thing. Except he's not being paid, but he's also not back home where he needs money for rent and food for his girlfriend.]

If there are ghosts, I don't really expect them to be friendly.

[Someone has had bad experiences with ghosts, okay?]

[personal profile] appraiser 2018-02-26 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you think so?

[ Ryoji hasn't had... well, any experience with actual ghosts. But his existence is one who brings death to the world, and he likes to believe that most pass on peacefully— that said, he's aware of how ghosts are portrayed in media, with anger and revenge and regret shackling them to the world so that they are doomed to haunt the living, and hopes that isn't the case here. ]

This house is old and falling apart... We aren't being driven out of it. Is it too much to hope that any spirits here might request for us to stay and clean the place up? Fill it with love after having been abandoned for so long.

I don't think that's how spirits work...

[Most want a... host...

...well, in retrospect, coming to this house was a bad idea. Mikiya is an optimist and likes to help people, but spirits? He's never had any real luck with them and he can't really talk to them either. So...]

...but it would be nice to meet a friendly one.

[...basically, he's an idiot who would like to believe that, maybe here, there are nice spirits.]
