Prompt 1:
he forest looms, uninviting and full of menace, an unwelcoming place for sure. Time to go explore! It isn't as though there's anywhere else to go, now that you've looked around the Town.
The trees whack at you with branches that have far too much mobility for normal trees, strange and mutated animals watch from the shadows and boughs, and there’s the constant, constant sense of being watched --
But eventually, nonetheless, you’ll come across a small house in the forest. It sticks out like a sore thumb, bright and colorful, which is probably the first warning that something is way off, and it’s...covered in candy. It’s a candy house! It looks delicious.
(It’s empty, too, not a single soul in it, without even furniture, but everything is otherwise edible and utterly delicious.)
But if you eat the candy? You’re going to have a terrible, overwhelming urge to do one of two things:
- Fight the first person you see
- Kiss the first person you see
Unfortunate.
Prompt 2:
he problem with a Town like this is that now that color is starting to return, bit by bit? You never really know when color’s going to come back -- or disappear. Maybe you’ve made a delightful, delicious sandwich from handmade bread and tomatoes and deer meat, all of which have color now… and then suddenly, when taking a bite, you get only the taste of ash and bread and tomato as the deer meat loses color.
Also, someone probably died for that color to fade away. Alarming!
Or maybe you’re walking along when suddenly your makeshift clothing is a hideous mix-match of colors; it had seemed fine when it was all grey and colorless!
Or perhaps, even worse, you’re walking out of a house when suddenly, the flowerbed in front of it has full color, bright and maybe a little blinding after so much monochrome. Damn those color mechanics.
Prompt 3:
he quest seems simple, on the Quest Post:
Quest 33: Feed the Cockatrice. Requirements: 2 of any color Key word, of course, is seems. First, you have to find the cockatrice. Maybe grab someone to drag into the woods with you, since there needs to be at least two of you. Time to stomp through the woods in search of the elusive cockatrice.
Of course, once you find it, the quest...looks a bit harder. The monster hisses, ready to turn anyone who approaches to stone, as cockatrice tend to do. What do you even feed that thing? How will you get it to take it without getting stoned up? There are so many questions.
At least the stone will wear off...eventually… if you’re unlucky enough to get petrified.
Prompt 4:
ut hey, you did it! You fed the cockatrice, it seemed satisfied, and now you can go fetch your reward from your home. It must be something amazing, with the work that you put in.
The only change in your home, though, is what looks like a...picture book. It's got a colorful cover (in your character's color shade), and has their name on the cover, so it definitely belongs to them.
And when they flip it open, it's clearly full of pictures scribbled in, as if drawn in scribbly crayon. Unlike the rest of the Town, this book is fully colorful, every shade of the rainbow in those crayon strokes... which depict, page by page, your character's worst moments in their life. Every single last horrific experience or tragic moment -- it's all there, in colorful, cute children's drawings.
Congratulations!

[Of course, Tonbokiri can't get a word in or do more than start to move his hand out to stop Mutsunokami from eating the glass. Of course they won't know until they try, but there must be a certain amount of--
The change in atmosphere around Mutsu is unmistakable, and Tonbokiri stands slowly, shards of sugar dropping from his hand. Mutsu is a fiery, impulsive sort, but out of the blue like this is so suspicious...]
What's this, all of the sudden, Mutsunokami-dono? Of course it's been a while. So if it's a spar you're after, we can do that all you want once we get back to town.
[Now, in the midst of the watching forest, really isn't the time for this.]
no subject
( And quickly, he shifts into stance and draws his sword, )
C'mon, Tonbokiri, let's go right now! ( He's got his honor. He won't attack as long as Tonbokiri is unarmed. His spear is still against the house but that isn't good enough. All of this talking is really starting to get on his nerves and he can feel his spirit starting to burn. Just a quick fight. That's all he needs right not to work off this energy-- this impulse. ) Arm yourself.
no subject
It is not a killing aura, thankfully, but the fighting spirit is nearly palatable. ...Nearly catching.
For a brief moment he frowns at Mutsunokami. Tonbokiri knows that so long as he doesn't arm himself he won't move, but that equally won't solve anything.]
You aren't yourself. But I will not refuse you, either. [At the very least, he will try to knock some sense back into him.
Keeping his eyes fixed on Mutsu, Tonbokiri takes up his spear and removes the sheath. With a quick mental note to keep an eye on the other's gun, he takes up a defensive stance.
Surely Mutsunokami will attack first like this. So let us see what this sugar-induced rush will bring.]
no subject
Gahaha! That's more like it!
( Really! Ah, he feels some sort of high coming on right now, a rush he can't seem to contain, and he doesn't really want to stop any of it. He isn't himself? That's what Tonbokiri had said earlier but... he feels fine. There's nothing wrong with him at all. He's as sharp as ever and he'll prove it by moving quickly to give the first blow, raising his sword in a diagonal slash. )
no subject
Pushing back against Mutsunokami's sword, he then shifts his hands as to bring the butt-end of the spear darting towards Mutsu's legs. Tripping him up would bring a quick end to this fight. And if he evades, Tonbokiri can keep the momentum of the movement going and bring the tip of the spear around to his face.]
no subject
He can see the spear moving for his legs and he laughs, raising his own leg to catch it, hooking his foot and leg around the end and pulling it back towards him, trying to control the movement. Mutsu is never and has never been a conventional fighter. He's not above some unusual tactics.
He'll try to shift his own movement, sidestepping the spear, trying to untangle himself from the mess of man and weapon and bringing his sword back for a tight, horizontal slash. This move would be easier if he were shorter-- a wakizashi would be ideal but what's stopping him from now? Unusual tactics, unconventional styles.... call them what you want but for Mutsu, they're just new and different and that's how you keep your opponent on their toes. )
A big guy like you... it's hard moving this close, isn't it?!
( If he drew his gun, this could be over quickly but that wouldn't be any fun at all. )
no subject
At that comment his lips turn up slightly.]
Of course. I'm somewhat taller than other spears.
[Taking two large steps back, he does not hesitate to resume the attack, stabbing at Mutsu's right side and keeping a powerfully firm grip on his spear. For now, he will try to open up some distance between them.]
no subject
Yeah, I guess ya can be pretty scary~
( But what's Tonbokiri's height compared to a Revisionist monster?
He won't let Tonbokiri gain any space if he can help it. Between the two of them, their ranges are their greatest advantage and disadvantage. The moment Mutsu loses ground, he knows Tonbokiri will have one on him. He charges for Tonbokiri, trying to keep the space between them tight. He sees the attack coming and he doesn't change his line of attack. If anything, he dodges just enough to avoid the brunt of the attack. The spear's blade cuts through his close and he can feel the blade graze against his skin. That's really going to sting later, he thinks. But it'll be worth it if he can win.
This time, he goes for a piercing attack right at Tonbokiri's arm. It's pretty clear his goal is to disarm him. It's gotta be hard to use a spear like that one handed, right? Luckily(?) for Tonbokiri, for as unconventional as Mutsu can be, he's also a pretty direct fighter and easy to read so he should be able to figure out Mutsu's attack without a problem. )
no subject
Of course Mutsu is keeping close. They have fought together and sparred together before. He knows Tonbokiri's openings as a spear. Likewise, while Mutsunokami's fearless, direct style is to be admired, Tonbokiri is aware of its flaws.
Like now.
Seeing Mutsu's stance shift and the direct stab coming for his arm, he shifts his outstretched right arm back so that the blade catches his bracer.
And, seized by an impulse, Tonbokiri lets go of the spear with his left hand and reaches it over to grasp at Mutsunokami's wrist.
He wants to be close, ne? Can he resist his sword being dragged forward and up by Tonbokiri's raw strength?]
no subject
But to answer your question: No. Mutsu absolutely can't resist that and his eyes go wide when he realizes what's going on. He tries to pull away but it's too little too late. He's being pulled too close for comfort now and without thinking, his free hand reaches for the gun at his side...
It happens so quickly, his hand is actually on the grip, the gun half drawn, when... something finally clicks. Swords aren't like guns at all. You don't draw your gun unless you're willing to accept the responsibility that comes with it. If you shoot, you shoot to kill. There's no pulling back a bullet like you can with a sword. The slightest movement can offset your aim and turn a minor injury into a deadly one.
And... he doesn't want to do that to Tonbokiri? He doesn't want to kill him. Heck, he doesn't even want to hurt him. Why are they even...
Still, at the end of this moment, his hand is still on his gun and he's mid-draw and Tonbokiri has no way of knowing what's going on in Mutsu's head to know that the effects of the candy are wearing off. )
no subject
As Mutsunokami's sword arm is pulled up, exposing his chest, the movement of his other hand towards his gun is clear. Tonbokiri's own eyes widen. A gun shot would be unblockable, especially point-blank, and would injure him far more than a sword.
He cannot believe that Mutsunokami-dono would want to injure him in that way, but he is also not himself right now.
With that flashing through his mind, he lets go of his spear with his right hand, brings the palm right up to Mutsunokami's chest, and shoves him back as hard as he can.
At the very least, he will not be able to draw his gun for a moment more. But Tonbokiri's spear now lies on the ground, and whatever happens, it will take him an equally precious moment to recover it.]
no subject
Mutsu is sent flying backwards, losing his grip on both his sword and gun in the process. His sword falls not too far from Tonbokiri, dropping to the ground heavily and his gun goes flying from his hand, landing somewhere between where Tonbokiri stands and where Mutsu lays.
The breath is knocked out of him and his chest hurts from where he was struck. Picking himself up, he coughs and tries to catch his breath. )
Ow, ow... Like getting hit by a cannon.
( On his hands and knees, he tries to collect himself. He tries to get his dang gun back and he manage to grab it by the barrel with one hand, holding up the other as it if to say, "wait a minute, wait a minute." He's not going to do anything, okay?
Being knocked back seems to have knocked some sense into him. Seeing the gun in his hands reminds him of everything that just happened and he rolls backwards, sitting down and supporting himself with his arms behind him, )
-- The hell just happened?!
( He's back. )
no subject
..."Like a cannon"? Does he know from experience?
When Mutsu holds one hand up, Tonbokiri relaxes a little. And when he asks that question, he holds his spear to the side and sighs.]
I really did knock some sense into you, didn't I?
You ate some of that candy window, and suddenly got all fired up for a spar with me. Do you remember it?
1/2
A hand through his hair, pushing back his bangs, and he frowns, )
Yeah... yeah, I remember. It feels weird though...
( Looking back on it all now feels like looking back on a dream. He knows what he did but it didn't feel like him at all. Aware of what he's doing but doing it against his better judgement. Where's his sword? He's looking around, ah, there it is. Well, it's okay where it is for now but he'll definitely have to get that once he's recovered a little more. )
... Sorry.
no subject
Gotta admit, it was pretty fun, though!
( Even if the compulsion wasn't natural, he has a warrior spirit. He's always going to enjoy a good fight, okay. )
no subject
Raising one hand to rub at the back of his neck he chuckles.]
Of course it was. You are always a very spry sparring partner.
But I hope this gives you some idea of the risks of this place. If you were with someone who wasn't able to knock sense into you, it would have been even more dangerous. [Telling Mutsu to "be careful" is wasted breath often as not, but hopefully he will take a moment to consider this...]
no subject
Gahaha, gotta keep ya on your toes. Don't wanna get outta practice and let behind, d'ya? ( Okay, okay, but this lecture? It helps that it's coming from Tonbokiri. If it was Izuminokami or someone else, Mutsu would laugh and dismiss them as concerns from a bunch of haters. But Tonbokiri isn't like other spirits. He's kind and patient, gentle and considerate. He isn't trying to criticize or judge Mutsu but rather, offer real advice.
So Mutsu is quiet, taking it in for the moment. Only for a moment, though. He doesn't like to stay grounded for long. Siding his gun back in the holster, he picks himself up and comes over to pick up his sword, )
Right, right. I'll keep it in mind from now on, Tonbokiri. Don't'chya worry.
( Always worry. )
... Ya okay, though?
( He'd... nicked him earlier, hadn't he? )
no subject
He worries. But Mutsu listened, so that is that for now.
Looking down at his chest he inspects the scratch - truly, only a scratch! - before fingering the cut in his top.]
Yes, thank you. This is nothing. I'm more worried about mending this tear. We should both take the time to keep our clothing in good repair. We have only what's on our backs right now, after all.
How is your wound? [It hadn't felt like he'd caught Mutsu very deeply, but best to make sure.]
no subject
It's just a scratch.
( A little more than a scratch but again, nothing serious. The clothes really aren't that important to him even if it is all he has to wear. )
D'ya know anyone who can sew?
( He'd offer but he isn't good with his fingers like that. )
no subject
Mm. Well, I could probably do something to get by, but I'm sure that there is someone among all the people here who would be better at it.
[He then pauses thoughtfully, curious about something.]
... Say, Mutsunokami-dono, about something you said earlier...
Am I scary?
no subject
I said that?
( Tilting his head curiously to one side. Huh, he must have really been into fighting earlier if he was running his mouth like that. Arms crossed, he frowns and thinks for a moment, )
Right now? Nah. Probably one of the least scariest guys I know. ( Hmm, ) I wouldn't wanna be on the wrong side against ya in a fight, though.
no subject
[He'd thought that Mutsu had said his height made him scary. Which would have made him self-conscious around the others in this town... At least such a needless worry can be easily dismissed!]
Thank you for your honest answer. Now... [Walking back to where he'd dropped his spear's sheath he picks it up, sheathes his spear and--]
What are we going to do about this dangerous house?
[Mm. Could actually use a cannon right now, eh?]
