Test Drive Meme 2.

These are the mem’ries that last.
These are the mem’ries that will never pass.
And time waits for no one.
It’s gone in a flash.
And only the mem’ries will last.

Prompt 1:

he forest looms, uninviting and full of menace, an unwelcoming place for sure. Time to go explore! It isn't as though there's anywhere else to go, now that you've looked around the Town.

The trees whack at you with branches that have far too much mobility for normal trees, strange and mutated animals watch from the shadows and boughs, and there’s the constant, constant sense of being watched --

But eventually, nonetheless, you’ll come across a small house in the forest. It sticks out like a sore thumb, bright and colorful, which is probably the first warning that something is way off, and it’s...covered in candy. It’s a candy house! It looks delicious.

(It’s empty, too, not a single soul in it, without even furniture, but everything is otherwise edible and utterly delicious.)

But if you eat the candy? You’re going to have a terrible, overwhelming urge to do one of two things:

  • Fight the first person you see
  • Kiss the first person you see

Unfortunate.

Prompt 2:

he problem with a Town like this is that now that color is starting to return, bit by bit? You never really know when color’s going to come back -- or disappear. Maybe you’ve made a delightful, delicious sandwich from handmade bread and tomatoes and deer meat, all of which have color now… and then suddenly, when taking a bite, you get only the taste of ash and bread and tomato as the deer meat loses color.

Also, someone probably died for that color to fade away. Alarming!

Or maybe you’re walking along when suddenly your makeshift clothing is a hideous mix-match of colors; it had seemed fine when it was all grey and colorless!

Or perhaps, even worse, you’re walking out of a house when suddenly, the flowerbed in front of it has full color, bright and maybe a little blinding after so much monochrome. Damn those color mechanics.

Prompt 3:

he quest seems simple, on the Quest Post:

Quest 33:
Feed the Cockatrice.
Requirements: 2 of any color

Key word, of course, is seems. First, you have to find the cockatrice. Maybe grab someone to drag into the woods with you, since there needs to be at least two of you. Time to stomp through the woods in search of the elusive cockatrice.

Of course, once you find it, the quest...looks a bit harder. The monster hisses, ready to turn anyone who approaches to stone, as cockatrice tend to do. What do you even feed that thing? How will you get it to take it without getting stoned up? There are so many questions.

At least the stone will wear off...eventually… if you’re unlucky enough to get petrified.

Prompt 4:

ut hey, you did it! You fed the cockatrice, it seemed satisfied, and now you can go fetch your reward from your home. It must be something amazing, with the work that you put in.

The only change in your home, though, is what looks like a...picture book. It's got a colorful cover (in your character's color shade), and has their name on the cover, so it definitely belongs to them.

And when they flip it open, it's clearly full of pictures scribbled in, as if drawn in scribbly crayon. Unlike the rest of the Town, this book is fully colorful, every shade of the rainbow in those crayon strokes... which depict, page by page, your character's worst moments in their life. Every single last horrific experience or tragic moment -- it's all there, in colorful, cute children's drawings.

Congratulations!

One.

( so many in the world who think reward should come without condition. of course, those with power lurch and grab for what is owed to them, and the act of distinguishing between those deserving and those transgressing is an art of parsing that few possess and fewer enforce. it's a responsibility that grows about naturally in a special person —— chosen by survival of circumstance and defiance of odds, christened by strength and a true understanding of power.

kureto stands at the cabin's threshold and looks up at the arched ceiling with scrutiny, taking in the scent of the dwelling's edible nature and pretending the person he's intruding on is of no interest to him. he wears an imperious presence that guards and embellishes, deceives and preys; if someone is going to be gullible enough to eat from the only colored place he's seen, playing right out of a brother's grimm script, then who was he to tell them to stop? welllll, actually, he is a person that loves telling people to stop. and telling them what to do, and berating and debasing them for doing things wrong, and lavishing in condescending praise when justice and order is done right by them; allowing them their mistake means allowing them their punishment, and although good little boys and girls showing restraint means many useful people to encounter, insubordination and selfishness invited an irreplaceable kind of fun.

whether this person has taken a bite out or not, they'll be approached from a safe distance behind them by a man with a twisted expression and very imposing eyebrows. with a smile stitched up into his mouth, kureto breaks off a piece of the door frame in a gloved hand and settles in, encroaches, a glean in his eyes that stays ambivalently wedged between amusement and enticement. )

Answer me. ( a small bounce of his palm and the piece of chocolate-doorframe flips in his palm. ) Have you tried any of this yet?

( his words are cold and cut through pretense, sounding much more interrogating and demanding than he means to, which is not at all, because he totally doesn't want to let on that he's interrogating this person and demanding compelled transparency. it's so serious. consider this candy-eating challenge a test of ultimate character and personality to him. )

Three.

( the section of the woods they've entered seems to gradually show off its life with every step, trees in monochromatic bloom and sporadic spattering of dulled gradient, almost attempting to imitate color -- but on second and third glance it seems to be a trick of the mind, wishful thinking and inexplicable yearning. there's a clearing in the brush for a bit, trees holding larger intervals of space between them, a fringe of bushes taking their place and giving the area the look of an orchard. working on as little information as he is, kureto assumes the creature will be nearby scrabbling for food, if only because he's heard so many other critters rustling and skittering away from the area. or what he fiercely believes to be so.

ah yes, and to the unfortunate person assigned to work with him, he ditched them quite some time ago to cover separate grounds himself. they can work together the only time it actually matters, which is when one of them has located the cockatrice's whereabouts. with an agreement to reconvene when necessary, the cockatrice's sudden appearance not too far of a distance before said (unfortunate) person is even less sudden than kureto's immediate presence by his partner's side, watching it coolly as it disappears behind a few trees. )

Hahah, what an ugly thing that is.

( and it's so hungry. this will be fun. they just need bait. )

Four

( implying kureto has a heart to break???

but, while what appears to be his own book is tucked safely under his arm, he'll be looking for anyone that has made the mistake of being dumb vulnerable enough to bring out their book outside the privacy of their room, possibly looking for answers or trying to make sense of the ominous thing. kureto's own book is strikingly dark and edgy even in its colorings, full of heartless survival and mountains of bodies creating a throne, right out of a kubrick horror or very early 2000s deviantart. )

Hey there. ( says the man obstructing their path, shoulders squared with self-importance, not wearing the least bit of invasive interest. ) What's that you have there?

( he's all earnest interest, really, no need to loom or lean, regarding the person with an expectant and even stare. as if he'll receive someone spilling it all or showing it off to him. )

Wildcard

( i love these...please hit me up with them!)

[He doesn't particularly want to be here on this mission, with this partner, in these woods, but here he is, eyes quietly rolling to the side at Kureto's appearance.]

Yeah. Are you sympathizing with it?

[He's, undoubtedly, going to get the worst role on this mission, so he thinks he has every right to be a sassy asshole and imply that Kureto is ugly, too. He's mature, he's an adult, and he's tired and wants to go home. Can they feed this thing already.

Actually, he doesn't even know if Kureto wants to stop just at feeding. He places his hand on his hip, glancing back between the trees for the bird and waits for Kureto's inevitable orders.]

( of course the objective is imperative — kureto isn't one to lose sight of it, categorical and precise as his mind is — but therein lies a temptation too sweet to resist, too exciting to deny himself of. the need to shut that stupid mouth of guren's, or at least to provoke him into justifying whatever methods necessary, come as they may.

his raises and settles on guren's shoulder with a measured grip, too rough to be affectionate and too soft to be seriously threatening. his lips tug at the remark, eyes drawn in and invited, opportunistic for the hospitality of guren's disrespect. it's precious when he does this, really, and just makes things more fun for him. how can he return such a gift? )

As always, you like to run that little mouth of yours.

( that grip turns to a pat, gaze leaving guren to draw ahead at their retreating target. )

But you're still going to do what I say, even as you act insolent. ( predictable in the best of ways. ) There's use in such reliability.

[Guren tenses at that grip. There's no way to hide it when Kureto's hand is directly on him like that, especially in this stupid outfit he's got on. He shoots Kureto a glare for it, heated and desperately wanting to prove him wrong, but there's a knowing coldness behind his eyes. He's not going to try anything.

At least, not right now. That obedience is a thin thread right now, when he wants so much to try and see if he could actually overpower Kureto now, on his own, with the strength of his demon. But it's too risky, and it's not as if he's forever free of the influence of the rest of the Hiiragi family. Things are still in motion.

So, ultimately, he's right, again, and Guren is left to fall into an angry silence. He'll give in to that argument, but that doesn't mean he'll just let Kureto have the last word, either.]

Aren't you rambling too much right now? Just tell me how you want to handle this. You haven't said a thing so far about what we're actually going to be doing.

[Aside from that whole splitting up thing.]

( that deference never gets old. each time he soaks it up and takes it all in it's nearly satisfying enough to derail his trajectory, seeing how much they can do with his foot at guren's neck and his gaze feeding off the resentment in his eyes. )

Right. ( kureto retracts his hand, resisting the urge to smile at guren's get-up. he's already made remarks about how befitting it is, no doubt, but every second he becomes more fond of the look, thinking it's simply a sign that the universe is on his side. disorienting as this experience is, he's content on thinking that the linchpin holding this entire world together is the universal truth of guren needing his authority and discipline. it just so happens that he's dressed for the part. )

I slayed what I could for food, so keep an eye on that thing while I retrieve a carcass.

( he was in a bit of a hurry over here, once he'd known guren had spotted the beast. since he isn't in any imminent danger, he can continue on with his original plan. )

Then we'll talk bait.

[personal profile] swordfucker 2018-04-30 08:27 am (UTC)(link)
[Every time he hears something about it, or just sees it in Kureto's eyes, he's filled with a fury he can't properly express. At this point, he almost welcomes Emma repairing his uniform with eight different colors of patchwork and thread, since he'd rather be a walking disaster than give Kureto any idea that he's here waiting for his rule and guidance.

Ugh. He's thinking about it again without any reason, even.

Thankfully, actual, real talk about what's happening pulls him out of his own head, and he blinks back to Kureto from the cockatrice.]

Bait. [That sounds promising, and he glances back through the trees, hand gripped at his sword even if he doesn't intend to use it.] I'll stay on it.

[So hurry up and bring that dead animal over. As instructed, Guren will make sure the thing stays in sight, and follow after it if it strays too far. But with some luck, it's staying in the immediate area, wandering around in search for food. Guren watches a small few unfortunate animals wander too close and become frozen in place.]

[personal profile] passio 2018-04-30 07:41 am (UTC)(link)
[ dextera does not like this.

this man has the same uniform as guren—or something similar enough, anyway—and that should maybe mean he's a friend, but he absolutely does not look like a friend! there's something about his very presence that unsettles dextera.

he tightens his grip around his book, looking between it and kureto, but he doesn't actually seem like he's going to hide or resist for long. for now, he's just trying to protect this book, something that he hasn't been able to make much sense of either without memories to connect to all of these drawings.

nevertheless, he has a weak demeanor. enjoy! ]

( a small hum of interest escapes him, low and throaty, the smile he polished up wearing at its edges and revealing a layer of darker persistence. so he was going to show defiance by not speaking? that's fine. this stranger has acknowledged him with his shrinking and guarded ways, and that has its own strict appeal to kureto's curiosity, the weakness coming off as an accessory of interest. more so than the book, which is more of a tool to use in these interactions, really. )

What's that? You don't feel like speaking? ( he steps in closer, the toe of his boot tapping against dextera's. ) That's fine. I'm more interested in what that book has to say.

( though he knows he could likely win an attempt to wrest it from the other, kureto untucks his own book and holds it up instead, expression dropping to something sever and surveying. )

I'd like to discuss what this all means. Why don't you show me yours so I can show you mine, hm?

[personal profile] passio 2018-04-30 08:15 am (UTC)(link)
[ his breath catches in his throat when their boots touch, and dextera takes a natural step back like he wants to run—but he doesn't, because he's definitely more scared of those consequences than he is of whatever would happen if they shared the information in these books. ]

...

[ his fingers are visibly, obviously trembling when he offers up his book. it's full of his secrets, of terrible memories. two identical winged children, ripped apart by a nondescript winged man. an impressive two-page spread of an apocalypse heralded by another winged figure, the sky colored in a red so bright it almost actually feels hot. then... quite a few pages of his death? several pages of death, actually, each one unique and painful.

it's not as horrifying as it could be, considering the delightfully low skill level of the artist, but it's obvious what it all is. ]

[The candy house had drawn Kuro's interest-- It had been far too long since he'd had something sweet, trapped in this place as he was, and the scent of candy and cookies had drawn him like a fly to honey through the forest and straight to the house.

He hadn't dared to taste any yet, still musing over the possible consequences of such a choice and whether a stomachache would be worth a taste of snack food after so long, discarding the possibility of it killing him since normal poison didn't work on vampires. When Kureto walks in, he'll find Kuro sniffing a piece of what looks to have once been sugary 'window glass', attempting to look completely innocent and not like he'd totally broken it off the windowsill.]

[Mikaela always does his best to avoid humans in general but especially the ones that might be from his world. He doesn't trust them at all. Probably for the best considering that they tend to be on opposing sides in a fight. However, picking them out of a crowd on another world isn't always the easiest thing to do. Not unless Mika knows their face pretty well.

In a world lacking color, it can be even more difficult to pick out familiar things. Which is why he doesn't recognize Kureto at first. Not to mention that all of their encounters so far had been at a distance.

He's simply wandering about the town, looking about for anything of interest when he notices the man from Nagoya Airport on the street as well. It would be better to avoid this particular individual, Mika knows that. It would be safer.

But he stands there, staring at the human - eyes narrowed into a glare.]
